Update On Emergency Street Closure Near Katterman's

A week ago, SDOT closed blocks on NE 54th Street and Sand Point Way for emergency road works.

SDOT latest information:

There is a gap under the traffic sign at this location which will be filled and repaired by our team once SPU has had a chance to inspect the drain/pipe for leaks. This work will be completed as soon as possible and the road will be reopened.

SDOT posted this information on June 17 on Twitter:

47th Ave NE is closed between Sand Point Way NE and NE 54th St due to urgent road construction.

At 3:00 p.m. on June 17, blocks at NE 54th Street and Sand Point Way were closed for emergency road works. It's a block south of Catman Pharmacy, a busy street just outside the neighborhood.

A detour sign directs traffic around the area, heading east on 50th Street NE, then 50th Avenue NE.

SDOT told Laurelhurst Blog:

The road closure was due to a breach in a private side channel which created a large gap under the road. Homeowners who have side gutters that fail are collectively responsible for their repairs, and SDOT cannot safely reopen the driveway until those repairs are complete.

On June 15, a plumbing company reported that while inspecting a side drain on a private property shared by several properties, they found a large crack under the driveway. Inspectors from the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and Seattle Public Services (SPU) found the highway unsafe to drive on and determined that the damage was caused by a damaged side drain and there was no evidence of pavement damage in the city of Seattle. . On 16 June, SPU notified the side channel property owner that it was their responsibility to repair the damaged side channel and fill in the gaps under the road.

He stressed that the city is in constant contact with landlords and working to arrange and schedule private contractors.

The Laurelhurst blog obtained this information from the driver in question:

I am concerned with how this road maintenance project is being handled and have had several vehicle crashes as a result.

Most of West 47th that meets Sand Point Way is restricted and closed or partially closed due to maintenance of concrete and asphalt on the road. I believe this project is the result of some underground utility work (Private Resident Project or Uncertain Utility Project/City Enterprise).

I've never seen an asphalt or concrete repair that took so long to cover. Partial road closures pose a danger as vehicles can still turn from Sand Point Way to 47th Ave NE in either direction, but there is not enough clearance on the 47th to pass vehicles safely in either direction.

My question: is it really necessary that this road is still paved and closed? Why has this stretch of road been closed off for so long? Who is leading this project and when is the deadline for removing the barricades?

The entire block of NE 47th Avenue was closed to two-way traffic for several weeks before construction began last month. Fortunately, the signals that were originally installed are safe and useful for traffic in all directions.

But recently, road closures or partial closures seem to be taking longer than necessary. Also, the recently used closing signs were not well designed, causing confusion for vehicles exiting the Sand Point Way. For example, there are some days when 47th Ave NE is closed for the entire block, but there are no signs prohibiting vehicles from turning onto 47th Ave on Sand Point Road, so vehicles stay on 47th Ave and they turn but cross the street. . This forces you to avoid, backtrack, or "reverse" turns at the last minute, leading to some downright dangerous situations. I've seen it on big trucks and trailers.
