Are Violinists At Metropolitan Market Really Playing?

The Safe Way, 2021

Who are the fiddlers popping up in neighborhood stores? Men, women and children were often seen at the Mercado Metropolitano.

Last year, a similar family was seen almost every day at Safeway near University Village. Several neighbors reported seeing the same man and woman, sometimes with a young child, the car parked nearby in Renton and Mukilteo. Groups are also located in Bellevue, Renton and many other nearby cities.

The internet is full of information about these violinists, according to one report they actually pretend to play the violin and ask for money. Reports are published nationwide.

A news report from East Texas said;

What some people call talented musicians is just a circle of performers who travel around the state playing their instruments to already orchestrated music.

"I didn't want to abuse my home," says Joel Kirkendoll, a talented violinist named Tyler.

These entertainers line parking lots and pretend to play music while customers drive around with music in their pockets.

"People who aren't familiar with his music listen to it and say, 'Oh my God, that's great!'" Kirkendoll said: “Actually, the track I played did all the work, and it didn't play at all.

Kirkendoll confronted the violinist at the Broadway Market Center and told him to stop the music and then perform with him.

Kirkendoll said "I took out the violin and asked him if I could play and of course he said yes". "He didn't play, so you said you didn't really know how to play." He said, and yes, I am so sorry.

Some local comments on Reddit say:

I saw him on different occasions. I saw the same man on Mercer Island last week and now on Bothell this week. They wrote "help feed my 3 children" or "help pay the rent" on them. rest in peace".

They line up in grocery store parking lots and "play" a violin connected to a megaphone with a backing track to fool you. If you see one, don't give any money away. You mislead people. Using friendly people has become a common scam.

These bots are not trying to trick people into believing they are real, these bots are emotionally blackmailing the fake talented people.

Here are more eyewitness accounts and additional Reddit reporting of sightings across the country.

Several neighbors told the Laurelhurst blog:

I like to donate money to the needy, but it is such a shame that these people take the wrong path of donations.

It is disturbing to see a child involved in this apparent fraud. Is there another way we can donate to this family?
