Jean Amick, Neighborhood Advocate Has Passed

Jan Amick, a longtime resident, winner of several city resident awards and president of SUN Park, died Nov. 18. She lives on the street with her husband, Russ. His daughter Christy Nagle lives a few houses away with her family.

In March 2007, Jean was involved in saving a piece of land at the corner of NE 47th Street and NE 47th Avenue from development. He and a group of Laurelhurst neighbors and friends purchased the corner through a donation to the Cascade Land Conservancy. He and Dixie Park are co-chairs of the Sun Park Committee.

This corner property was originally a 1920's bungalow style mansion. The developer divides the land into three plots and builds 2 houses on top of the 2 plots. Sun Park residents, along with much of the community, attended a meeting with city officials to save the third lot from development. And it turned into a beautiful pocket garden called Saving Urban Nature (SUN) .

The neighborhood "Mulch Bunch" (as Jean Amick calls it) volunteers still have a Saturday morning work party that creates Sun Park.

Jean has been involved in many environmental projects over the decades. He worked to install the cameras at five points, at the busy intersections of Mary Gates Memorial Drive NE, NE 45th Street, NE 45th Place and Union Bay Place NE . In August 2008, three cameras were installed in Five Points after the Laurelhurst Community Club voted unanimously to support the wishes of the neighbors , and in 2011 the lights were removed with more than 400 signatures on a petition. In 2013, the law was changed only on two arteries.

In 2017, a small task force of concerned North Seattle neighbors, including Jan, worked with the 520 Bridge Project team to come up with a solution to the problem of flashing lights on the SR520 bridge . . In 2019, LCC Trustee McAleer and former trustee Jean Amick attended the results presentation in February.

In 2021 , the Laurelhurst Community Club recognized Jean and several other neighbors at their annual meeting . LCC wrote in the newsletter :

Genie is the epitome of the great neighbor, spreading joy as he rides his bike through the streets, smiling, throwing a bouquet, sharing an archived newspaper article, or inviting you to join him in "Weeding and Sweeping the Garden." Sun Jean supports the park's vision, bringing residents together to buy the land and turn it into a beautiful green space for people of all ages. Jean is also an avid bird watcher and provides a colorful habitat for the rare and native birds that roam her home. roadside garden

Here's what neighbors say about Jean:

Jan Amik is a passionate leader in our neighborhood. Jane and her husband raised a Russian family here.
She is a big supporter of our public schools and is the superintendent of SUN Park with her friend Dixie Porter.
A month ago, he was still riding his bike around the neighborhood as usual. Jean is a member of a group of amateur lake swimmers called the Laurelhurst Beach Club Fattie Flee.
We look forward to seeing you at Amick's Ice Cream Social every summer in Webster Pt. - Bring the content!
Genie has a wicked sense of humor with bright blue eyes and isn't shy about asking her neighbors to do their homework!
Jean attended a neighborhood meeting minutes before leaving for the Poconos, the place she loved most in her life, surrounded by her family until the end of her life.
We will miss you very much!

Our beloved Jean Amick passed away on Thursday surrounded by her family. What a woman she is! I am very saddened by this news. May his grave be filled with light.

Here is information about Sun Park posted on the Laurelhurst Community Club website:

The story of the sun (Save Urban Nature) garden

SUN is the conservation of urban nature. In 2007, SUN was the vision of Jean Amick and Dixie Jo Porter, who bought a small plot of land from a developer who planned to replace the original old farmhouse and its garden with three houses.

Funded in part by a $15,000 environmental grant, neighbors and community members participate in the tireless design and fundraising process that designs and builds unique local herb gardens. The property, which needed an "official" overseer, was leased to the Cascade Land Conservancy, later renamed Forterra, with the expectation that SUN Park would be acquired by Seattle Parks and Recreation in the future.

In August 2019, the Friends of SUN Park donated this beautiful green space to Seattle Parks and Recreation. Additionally, significant maintenance funds raised by SUN volunteers over the years are given to the Park for future purchases. The Friends of SUN Park work closely with the Park to ensure everyone's care and enjoyment.
